Framing Statement
This project aims to attract and engage with the audience by drawing parallels between the society's perception of beauty and the convergence of old and new media. The media is responsible in portraying and representing ‘beauty’ through cosmetic productions, and other alterations such as advertisements and such. This has largely influenced the perception of beauty in today’s society.
Therefore, in order to contrast and compare the various kind of 'beauty' and in this case is the natural vs. constructed beauty, this project is aiming to deconstruct the perception of beauty and perfection by focusing on the story of a young girl, as she embarks on a journey to transform herself into a celebrity alike magazine model.
This young girl has been affected by today's perception of beauty and she fulfilled her wish by transforming herself into a 'celebrity' in this project. The main theme 'Evolution' is represented throughout the entire transformation - the whole make-up and dressing up process. This project will be represented as an online magazine, in other words 'e-magazine', which not only makes the project more interactive and interesting, and it is showing an understanding of the new digital age as well.
Last but not least, audiences are asked to participate at the end of the project. So feel free to leave comments or feedbacks, and how you feel about the project as well as which version of the young girl you personally/secretly will vote for.
So what are you waiting for?! Start flipping the magazine now.

(Note to wider public - these comments should be taken in the context of this being a university class exercise! These RMIT projects are very sophisticated, and we welcome much simpler and entirely amateur contributions to Gene Pool too!).
Hi team (Melissa, Laura, Cyndy, Connie)
Thanks for sharing your project on Gene Pool
I really like the idea of creating an online magazine (and was interested to know more about the design and production tools you used to construct and present your piece). I like the way you presented the process of transformation, and used it to explore notions of manufactured beauty.
And, wasn't it interesting that, in the end, most of the people you interviewed preferred the "before" shots, describing them as more natural?
A few quick comments
- I found the music/audio bed throughout the magazine production a bit tacky and over the top. It might have been good to think about the sound more, and use something less imposing. It felt a bit like sound wallpaper, or the music you hear in a shopping centre elevator (perhaps that was your intention though, given the topic?)
- the blog is an interesting addition, and gives an insight into the process and thinking behind the project (if the blog is for a formal presentation or a class submission, it's worth doing a spelling and grammar check perhaps, or having someone help with that?).
Thanks again for adding to (the) Gene Pool - really great to have your work here. And good luck with your next projects.Feel free to add your thoughts here too.
