Video: video with timeline stutter FX
Here is a short example of classic VJ technique. It combines frame flipping, colour inversion and scrubbing. 3 very simple interventions that have a clear but strong effect. In this instance made by a combination of scrubbing along the timeline using a midi controller, and random frame jumps. normally video is played back frame by frame in sequential order, but if you can jump from say frame number 1 to 76 then 897 then 2 you get nice jump cut effects. This works well if the subject is moving but only in a limited way. The random or scrubbed frames will all relate but have an unnatural movement. The VJ often moves the video with a hand held knob, motivating the vision in time with DJ music to create a synchronisation that can be quite powerful. Random playback can produce good results as well - when we look at visuals the mind is seeking meaning and connections and any synch will usually be noticed and built into the 'sense' of the kinetic poem.
