Navigating sonic seas.
A bit about me…
The Vessel Project has evolved from one idea - to create an orchestra of Rod Cooper’s instruments. But it has become so much more than one person’s creative pursuit.
For two decades Rod Cooper has constructed metallic instruments that become sculptural objects of sound.
The Vessel is a long boat form with semi-enclosed sound chambers covered in strings, springs, continuous bowing mechanisms, tongs, rods and tubing.
Collaboration is the all encompassing pursuit and motivation behind the project.
The multi-performer instrument provides a situation for other builders to attach their creations to the main stainless steel hull, again expanding the sculptural and musical potential. The vessel’s mast includes a harp and a sail for video projection.
Rod’s experience and contact within the Australian arts community fosters collaborations with an elected group of Artists who apply their expertise in music performance, sound sculpture, electronics, construction, lighting, film and video.
The core artists and builders are:
Rod Cooper: metal construction/ percussion/ bowing
Anthony Magen: architectural intervention
Dale Chapman: construction and electronics
John Jacobs: aerial navigation and pyrate radio
Riki-Metisse Merlow: automated sound sculptures
Dale Gorfinkle: construction/percussion/automation
Each vessel performance is unique and never repeated. The guest visual artist determines the visual content and the musicians interpret this through sound. We approach each performance as a new installation, exploring the spatial acoustic qualities of each performance space.
The placement of the Vessel in the space, the positioning of speakers, the imagery and projection surfaces changes each time we perform.
