I took this photo at Xian railway station several days after the Wenchuan quake had hit. The roads from the railway station had been blocked off to allow swift passage of ambulances out of the station. There must have been over 50 ambulances there waiting to transport victims of the earthquake. On the road stood officials, medics and military men and women, waiting to do their bit in the devastating situation.

Hi Mandrillus,
I have to say something to you when I see a photo from Xian! I was living there toward the end of the Cultural Revolution, met my first husband there, and spent at least one night in a car because of the fear of an earthquake after the Tangshan quake in '76. Other nights in a makeshift shelter and conducted classes outside. Thanks for taking me back there with your photo - and it is great!
Also, thanks for your response to my question about what an Aussie is. My son is Eurasian, does that mean by many people's definition he is not an Aussie? I'm sure we would agree on the answer to that one. (I'll reply more fully to your response another day. I'm on a mission to change the generally accepted definition!)
