Image: long way from home
I can't put it into a sentence just yet, so I'll just go with some choice words and phrases. Endless, empty, isolated, infinite, silvery, hostile, terrifyingly beautiful, endless, endless, endless. It feels like we are making a journey into outer space. The landscape goes on, and it doesn't change; it changes you. Some of the empty flatness gets inside you and creates this uncanny, primitive sense of acceptance. "Planet earth is grey-green and there's nothing I can do."
I'm surprised by how little work I've been able to do. On the train, I can't seem to focus on the notes in front of me. My eyes keep getting drawn to the window. Nothing has changed out there, but my eyes keep going there anyway.
Today's trip will be long: 7.5 hrs. But I'm not too worried. Time passes differently out here. In its ancient infinitude, the landscape makes a mockery of minutes and hours. We'll get to Charleville some-when. Until then, there's miles and miles to gaze at.
