Jamal Joumaa

Jamal is an abstract expressionist painter with an interest in poetry and literature. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Damascus in 1978, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts. Jamal has a long history of exhibiting in Lebanon and Syria and has more recently held a solo exhibition at the University of Western Sydney Gallery (2003). Jamal is currently completing his doctoral studies at UWS.

Artist Statement

In my opinion, art establishes a process for validating human existence; however art reveals human experience as a choice and a way of life. Creating visual literature is my aim when I am painting; this work is also about ideas, concept and belief. Its elements are inspired by symbols of my tradition and my personal view about life and my surroundings. I hope the aesthetic and perspective of my work makes the life of the viewer meaningful.
