How is Pool moderated?

last updated: 06.10.09

Seen some junk floating around?

Pool has entered a new phase of collaborative moderation. The ABC Pool team along with Pool's community of contributors and site visitors can now combine efforts to keep Pool safe for all to enjoy. We're calling it 'reactive moderation' because we will react swiftly to all moderation alerts from community members.

How does this work?

You can alert Pool moderators to inappropriate content on the site by simply clicking on the alert button. When you do you'll be requested to submit a reason and category of
complaint, and a message will be sent to the ABC Pool team. We'll make
an assessment of the content using Pool's community guidelines and terms of use. In brief, contributions should not be smutty, disrespectful or commercial.

When we take action we'll report this transparently on the site. The Pool team may choose to leave the work online, add a content warning, edit the item, warn the contributor or ban the contributor from Pool. We want Pool to have a diversity of contributions and opinions, but we will swiftly remove inappropriate
material.

So if you come across a contribution that you think should not be on Pool because it may breach the community guidelines, please use the 'alert moderator' button at the bottom of the page to let us know.

We all have a part to play to help keep Pool a healthy, stimulating and friendly place to swim around in.

Contributors:  Be brave, publish your boundary-pushing works, but be mindful of the community and its guidelines.

Visitors: Be liberal, but don't hold back with those complaints. If something doesn't seem right let us know. We'll approve an edgy contribution if it can be justified within the guidelines, but we need to hear about this item from you so that we can make the call and keep Pool safe for all.

The ABC Pool team
: We will act quickly, fairly and openly. It's our responsibility to keep the community and site visitors informed about moderation practices and decisions.

If we work together and keep media conversational new stories and ideas can emerge.

Where did my vowels go?

There are a few words that we just can't publish on the ABC. So the Pool team is trialling a method of editing called disemvoweling.

Instead of censorial deletion we just remove all the vowels from the offending word.

We like it because it's an alternative to removing a contribution and we hope it discourages further use of these words.
