Blog: Pool in the New Media Economy
Media economist Simon Molloy says it started with the Grateful Dead. Then the Arctic Monkeys, Prince, and Radiohead too. But can there be a sustainable business model based on 'free'?
Former Pool intern Julienne Chan spoke with Molloy about the changing media economy. For me, one of his most interesting ideas was that with new platforms for content delivery, you “need to be able to visualise, create, conceive of connections between different sorts of content.”
How does Pool fit into all this? Can it be of service to artists seeking commercial return on their content? Does open licensing allow artists to make money?
He says the real commercial potential of using Pool comes through creating connections between artists, and them being able to “find each other in a trusted space.”
If you think of Pool as a distribution platform, there’s enormous potential to assist artists to make a living from their work. It also doesn’t require artists to upload new works – your profile can be an online portfolio of works that have been publicly available elsewhere.
The photograph above was taken by Pamela Lofts. Pamela has exhibited nationally and overseas, is represented in state and regional galleries, and has been awarded a number of Australia Council grants. Pool is yet another way she is distributing her work.
Use Pool to get your work out there.
Get noticed. Make connections.
