Image: Bruce Petty interviewing Sister Houda at Mar Musa before I placed my little recorder in front of her. 3rd June 2009.
Sister Houda touches on the perennial question of "The Other", and does not shy away from referring to her spiritual journey: discovering that Muslims are people.
Growing up in outback Queensland in the 50's, I belonged to the Protestant church, attended the local state school, walked past the Catholic school most mornings and watched the ritual throwing of stones (more precisely, pebbles) between the Catholic and Protestant kids. (Is it true that Catholic kids have more freckles?)
Then some time in the 80's or 90's, I caught myself thinking something never meant to be uttered, "These colleagues in front of me are Catholics. I'm working with Catholics."
My father, a fervent Adelaide Crows supporter, senses boundaries - The Other - in Port Adelaide fans.
