Stella's Story

Audio: Stella's Story

My radio journalism class at UTS was told to tell someone's story.
Stella Hopkins is a five-year-old girl who lives in Enmore, Sydney.
I thought it would be interesting to get a "life story" from a child's perspective. You couldn't ask for better talent than Stella.
Her story came to life after 20 minutes of interviewing (over a couple of hours).
I've included noise from Enmore Road and the local park.
Enjoy!

Hi Rosie This story is so

    Hi Rosie

This story is so compelling and well-edited. I'm putting together an audio journal project and was wondering if you'd be interested in participating in it? The website is www.paperradio.org.
    Love to hear from you.

    Hi Rosie,
I only just listened to this story, and I loved it. There's something about kids and what they say that's so enchanting in its simplicity hey. Would love to hear more of your work on Pool.
    Yay for you, Bridget.

    That part about the bbq

That part about the bbq wipes is just priceless! Like the others, I really enjoyed your use of sound, giving the piece time to breathe. I've never interviewed someone as young as Stella before - I imagine it would be a fine line between prompting for answers while still trying to ask open-ended questions...
Thanks for sharing this to Live Local,
    Kate

    Thanks for all the feedback

Thanks for all the feedback guys (and rotating the photo around).
I had a lot of fun putting this together - I laughed many times.
I'm happy to share the different sounds with other pool users, will put them up soon.
Also happy to share the full interviews if people are interested? There's lots of material I wish I could've used but just didn't make the cut.

    Thanks,
    Rosie

    Great to meet Stella, thanks

Great to meet Stella, thanks heaps Rosie. I have edited the photo for you. I like the use of sounds in your story. You might like to share some of them just by themselves without voices so other folks can use them in their radio stories we have a place for them here: http://www.pool.org.au/group/sound_pool you may find some sounds there that are useful to you too!
    Cheers John

    This is a gorgeous story.

This is a gorgeous story. So wonderful to get a child's eye view on a local community - to see how small their world view is yet how they notice stuff we just ignore like BBQ wipes and spiders. You've used sound very effectively to evoke a sense of place - I loved the plane that comes crashing through. Stella's charming personality certainly comes through too. It's a shame you had to include your two questions though, somehow they detract from us utterly entering her world.

    Hi Rosie,
To rotate the picture, you will have do it outside of Pool (in paint, etc), and then upload the saved (rotated) image. I hope that works!
