The world of prostitution usually lurks in the dark shadows of society’s attention, surrounded by secrecy and hushed whispers.
In an uncensored live performance run by Melbourne volunteer organisation Project Respect in conjunction with Brunswick Women’s Theatre, light has been cast on the forbidden world of the Melbourne sex industry.
The play, “Prostitute - Who Is She?” uncovers the sex-workers stories of fear and isolation through performances by some of the ex-sex workers themselves, and a group of actors who have been coached by women who have experienced this life first hand.
Today we will explore the relationship between the sex workers sharing their personal stories and the actors performing these stories to the public.
What did it mean for an ex-sex worker to tell her story publicly through acting out her own life in the play?
What was it like for a young actor to take on the role of a prostitute under the guidance of women who have actually lived this hidden life?
Jonathon Hutchison and Emily Naismith share the tale of an ex-sex worker who bravely performed her story to a live audience and an actor who took on the role of a prostitute under the instruction of ex-sex workers themselves.
Let’s take you on the journey of the rehearsal and performance of Prostitute Who Is She. Let us step inside her shoes.
