Hi Jess, you shouldn't give in to those neighbourhood bullies who told you to get your garbage bins off the street. If that's the only way they're prepared to interact with you then don't cower to their desire for a perfect looking street. But seriously, I agree with Nicole, work on your sound quality and smooth out your mixing and your pieces will sound lovely. Also I thought the footsteps were quite fast and wondered whether this was because you didn't like being in the street and so hurried to get indoors whenever you were there. Or perhaps life in Melbourne is so rushed compared to your former country lifestyle. A bit of variety in the speed of the footsteps would have made the piece more interesting. I liked the sound of the cat.

hi jess - you have a warm, relaxed style of delivery that's very easy to listen to, despite your sometimes dodgy sound quality!
for me, the story became interesting from the moment we learn you'd lived on the street for years, yet knew nobody but the cat. (very nice use of the cat approaching and meeowing there.) due to the lack of solid content and the rocky sound quality, my attention had been waning until then. but you captured me instantly with that line.
the story grows and develops depth from that point. we hear about the note - and realise what a repressive street this is - and what obliging people your family are. and it's from that point we start to learn about what really matters to you.
so, to recap, i had initial reservations while listening to your piece, jess, despite your obvious enjoyment of the street sounds. it initially didn't seem to have enough substance. but i was wrong. so i'd say, work on your sound quality and most importantly, get to the meat of the story faster. you need to set the scene, and you do that, but do it in about half or even a third of the time.
you have something to say.
