Having a love song written to you is an extraordinary experience.
This , by my artier (I meant partner, but the typo is closer to the truth) Geoffrey Datson, was written following a holiday we took to his parents' farm in the Noosa Hinterland. From our Sydney studio, after the 'summer of love' we'd just had on the hillsides of their beautiful valley, this song emerged.
I didn't know then that a couple of years later, I would abandon my career, learn to value conversation with chickens and cows, and take up life on the land.
Now, this song contains all the years I can pack into its invitation to this bucolic chapter of my life.
Love songs are like that - they are carriers of love and belonging. Even the mournful cries of lost love inform us about the grandeur of the emotional connection we desire. Whole relationships can be contained in a song - that connection, that frisson, that vision of perfect union with the other half of your being.
I wrote a long form version of this simple little song. My memoir, published and out there on the shelves of libraries tells the larger story, but Geoffrey's expression of our shared attitude to our place encapsulates the entire book. All our common memory of being here is encoded forever in this lovely little song.
