Hello Benedict
I'm a newbie to Pool, and wanted to say you're inspirational. Just listened to the Bookshelf interview with Sara and gave silent applause at the end. Look forward to listening to your other work.
I work as an English language teacher in China. I'm an Australian. I have tried to facilitate language learning in the classroom by incorporating communication technology in the classroom. Especially mobile technology since students can't live without their cell phones! I get students to practice their English by getting them to make audio monologues of their lives. And encourage them to be imaginative and creative in their efforts. However, only the not-so-shy tend to get interested and excited.
Want to share some of my students efforts, latter, with permission. But have been inspired by your stuff. Thanks.
warm regards

Thank you for your kind words, Robert! I'm still very much a newbie myself, but I'm glad you like the work.
Your project with your students sounds interesting. It reminds me of Joe Richmond's excellent project, 'Radio Diaries'. Have you come across it? He gave tape recorders to all sorts of people - young black South African women with HIV, disabled school children. Over a number of months they would record their thoughts about what was happening, occasionally interview friends or families, or make 'field' recordings in their homes, playgrounds etc. Joe then mixed the tape for NPR in the States. The beauty of it was the long time frame. It gave even the shy subjects time to get comfortable with the microphone, and with Joe. So maybe you just need to be patient with your students!
Thanks for getting in touch. I'll be sure to keep an ear out for your work. More about Radio Diaries here: http://www.radiodiaries.org/

Cheers, Gretchen. You're right, this one was a little self-conscious. If you're interested, I think the other one, #2, came off much better.

This is a charming interview ... if a little self conscious on the part of interviewee and interviewer... An excellent idea though!
